There is no other subject in which the latest slang words and students’ own language habits are valuable and relevant aspects of subject knowledge. As a result, there are frequent moments in the course when students’ faces light up with the realisation of something they have always known unconsciously but had never really thought about before. By focussing on this, we are able to make the subject both relevant and interesting to students. We use real-world examples as far as is possible so audio and video resources play a large part in lessons and since we also explore attitudes to language there is always room for lively debate.

At the start of each academic year of study students following an A-Level course without a pass at grade C in GCSE or IGCSE English Language or with an Academic English score below 6.5 overall must join an Academic English training course for the duration of the academic year which will be timetabled alongside A-Level lessons.
