They provide a fundamental grounding in a number of core subjects and achieving good GCSE qualifications enables students to progress on to A-level courses. In Years 10 and 11, international students normally take eight subjects to GCSE / iGCSE level. All students are prepared for iGCSE English as a Second Language (Edexcel) and GCSE mathematics. Students then usually select five optional subjects from a pool which includes biology, chemistry, physics, geography, history, art & design, design technology, drama, food & nutrition and music. Most students also elect to take GCSE or iGCSE in their own language. The school facilitates these entries but does not formally teach the students. All students take IT lessons leading towards the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL). Many students join in Year 9 or earlier and study subjects which they then select to study at GCSE level in Years 10 and 11. This can be advantageous as students gain a good grounding and knowledge in the subjects prior to GCSE level study.

A modern language: French or Spanish. Pupils with a significant learning difficulty may have the option not to take a modern language, following discussion with the Director of Studies. In addition all pupils will study Religious Studies and be encouraged to enter for the GCSE (or Certificate of Achievement) Religious Studies at the end of Year 11. All pupils study Information Technology and will be entered for GCSE short course.
